With the help of Audubon’s Seabird Restoration Program, Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife and US Fish and Wildlife service used Laysan Albatross decoys from 1993-1996 to attract the birds to suitable nesting habitat on Kahikaipu Island.  The birds had been trying to breed on Oahu, but were mostly unsuccessful due to feral dog and cat predation.  They were also attempting to nest on airport runways that created obvious hazards for birds and humans!  During the course of the study, albatross frequented the island in the areas of the decoy colonies but did not breed.

The Kaua‘i Albatross Network began using albatross decoys in 2010 at several sites to help further their goals of “preserving the vitality of the Laysan Albatross and promoting safe habitat”.
